Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe attends the 9th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand (16-8-2024)

Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe participated in the 9th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting which was held on 16 August 2024 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
 
The 9th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was co-chaired by Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and Mr. Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and also attended by the Heads of Delegations of the MLC member countries, Mr. Sok Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Ms. Nguyen Minh Hang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
 
During the 9th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the Ministers cordially discussed and exchanged views on the progress and future direction of the Mekong Lancang Cooperation.
 
Their discussions focused on promoting agricultural sector and food security, preserving water resources and environment, combating transboundary crimes and enhancing tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
 
During the Meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs also updated the Myanmar’s cooperation efforts in the MLC to the Heads of Delegation of MLC member countries. In his discussion, he highlighted to further enhance cooperation in agriculture sector development and food security in the region, to strengthen multi-model connectivity and to deepen cooperation in the areas of law enforcement and combating transnational crimes, illicit drug trafficking and arms smuggling, online fraud and online gambling. He also stressed the importance of addressing the problem of air pollution, environmental conservation and water resource management.
 
The Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Mrs. Eksiri Pintaruchi hosted a welcome dinner on the evening of 15-8-2024 at the Intercontinental Chiang Mai Hotel in honour of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and delegations of MLC member countries to the 9th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
 
The Mekong–Lancang Cooperation (MLC) is the regional cooperation mechanism established in 2016 and it comprises of six member countries namely Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. The main aim of MLC is to promote socio-economic development in the Mekong-Lancang region and to reduce development gaps among MLC member countries. Myanmar has been granted a total of (118) regional development projects through the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (MLC-SF) from 2017 to 2024.

U Than Swe, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar held Myanmar-China bilateral consultations with Mr. Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China at 1910 hrs on 14 August 2024 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nay Pyi Taw.
 
During the bilateral meeting, the two sides cordially exchanged views on matters pertaining to the further consolidation of the existing Pauk Phaw relations and, the Chinese Government’s consistent support towards Peace and sustainable socio-economic development of the people of Myanmar, and reaffirmed mutual support in regional and multilateral arenas and matters of common interests. The Deputy Prime Minister also appraised the latest developments of Myanmar to the Chinese Foreign Minister.
 
In the evening, U Than Swe, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a dinner to the visiting Chinese delegation led by Mr. Wang Yi, Member of Political Bureau of Chinese Communist Party Central Committee and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China at the Horizon Lake View Hotel.

Ms. Ma Jia, Ambassador- designate of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar paid a courtesy call and presented a copy of her letter of credence to H.E. U Than Swe, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar at 1000 hrs on 13 August 2024 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nay Pyi Taw.
 
During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister for Foreign Affairs congratulated Ms. Ma Jia on her appointment as the Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar and they cordially discussed the matters pertaining to the further enhancement of the existing “Pauk-Phaw” relations, the acceleration of Myanmar-China bilateral relations, and the mutually beneficial cooperation in both regional and international arena, especially in ASEAN and United Nations.

Mr. Mubarak M A Aladwani, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the State of Kuwait to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, who has completed his tour of duty in Myanmar, at 1030 hrs on 12 August 2024 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw.
 
During the call, Deputy Prime Minister and Union Minister expressed appreciation to H.E. Mr. Mubarak M A Aladwani, for his contribution in promoting bilateral relations and cooperation between Myanmar and Kuwait. They also cordially exchanged views on matters pertaining to the further enhancement of the existing friendly relations, expansion of the mutually beneficial cooperation including trade and investment, implementation of cooperation agreements between the two countries, as well as the regional and international issues of mutual interests.

During the meeting, they exchanged views on matters related to UNHCR’s ongoing activities in Myanmar as well as ways and means for further cooperation between the Government of Myanmar and the UNHCR.
